Valuable tips for your trip to Hampshire

Unless you dislike the warmer weather, the best time to visit Hampshire is generally summer, when the days are longer.

  • Beach holidays
    Beach holidays

If you want to take a campervan in Hampshire to the coast and the beach, we recommend visiting during summer for the best weather overall. However, as it is busiest then, you may want to go during late spring or early autumn. Be aware, though, that the weather is very unpredictable, and plan your trip accordingly.

  • Hiking
    Hiking

The best to go hiking along the various trails throughout different parts of Hampshire will depend on your skill level and experience, as well as the weather conditions you prefer. If you want a pleasant and warm experience, go during summer. However, it could be too warm, so spring or autumn may be a better option.

  • Sightseeing
    Sightseeing

Given the difficulty in predicting the British weather and climate, it can take time to pinpoint when it is best to explore the different landmarks and sites of interest across Hampshire. While spring means fewer crowds, it also means a greater chance of rain and a continuous chilly breeze off the coast onto the mainland. Summer brings a lot of warmth and brighter days but more crowds.

Best campervan routes around Hampshire

To get the most out of your experience when you hire a campervan in Hampshire, there are several great driving routes you should consider following.

A272 – Winchester to Petersfield – The South Downs National Park
If you want to drive through the expansive and stunning South Downs National Park, the road from Winchester to Petersfield is a great way to do it. The road traverses through the North and South Downs and, depending on where you start your journey, finishes in Hampshire or East Sussex after 90 miles of changing landscapes.

B3084 – Romsey to Stockbridge – Test Valley
Another great driving route to try when you rent a motorhome in Hampshire is the B3084, which takes you from Romsey to Stockbridge and runs through the Test Valley. On this road, you have the opportunity to take in some breathtaking views of the mighty River Test and the stunning postcard-friendly countryside backdrop.

The New Forest
One of England's most historic and iconic forests, New Forest in Hampshire, was established by William the Conqueror in 1079 and still retains a sense of tradition and history. There are various roads and trails throughout the forest, but one of the best roads for the most scenic experience is the 4 km loop rail that starts near Brockenhurst. Be careful when driving through the New Forest, as many roads are very narrow and used by animals, walkers, horse riders and cyclists.

Places of interest and excursions in Hampshire

New Forest
The then-king William the Conqueror established the New Forest in 1079, and it was officially designated a British National Park in 2005. The forest stretches across 566 square kilometres and consists of varied landscapes, from woodlands to river valleys and heathlands, all unspoilt by modern life. Cattle, ponies, and deer can be spotted roaming through the woodlands and heaths.

South Downs National Park
South Downs National Park is England's newest assigned national park in 2009. It covers an area of 1,627 square kilometres of ancient woodlands, river valleys, stunning heathland, rolling hills, and the famous white cliffs that are part of the Heritage Coast. The parkland spreads from Winchester to Petersfield in Hampshire and extends to Eastbourne in East Sussex. The South Downs Way is a 101-mile road you can travel along on bike, horseback, or foot. It takes you through the splendid countryside that was called “some of England’s finest” by famed travel writer Bill Bryson.

FAQ
  • Like much of the UK, particularly England, you are not technically allowed to park and sleep overnight everywhere when you drive a motorhome for hire in Hampshire. If you do decide to take a chance and stop on a public or private road without permission, the authorities could ask you to move on.

  • Like the above, it depends on the car park and where you are trying to park your motorhome rental in Hampshire. Some car parks allow motorhomes, so it’s best to check before you start travelling.

  • If you are looking to park your camper van for hire in Hampshire on private land and have the expressed permission of the owner, then you should be fine. Again, you will need to check this before you start travelling to avoid problems while trying to enjoy a nice trip.
