Ireland is famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, and when you book a campervan for hire in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, you have a great starting base from which to explore the country. There are many outstanding natural reserves and forest parks, like Murlough National Nature Reserve, Slieve Gullion Forest Park and Castlewellan Forest Park to the south of the capital. Northwards, you will find the Cranny Falls and Glenariff National Nature Reserve.

Along with the nature reserves and national parks, there are also many stunning rivers, lakes, and an incredible coastline to explore. Helpful tips for your holiday in Belfast

Are you ready to book a campervan in Belfast but wondering about the best time to travel there? Ideally, if you want the best weather conditions for outdoor activities and driving, June to September offer the least rainfall. Remember, though, that this is the most popular time to travel, and it is likely to be terribly busy. It might be best to go during May or October for a quieter time, but that ever-present threat of rain.

  • Outdoor activities
    Outdoor activities

Spring during March and May is the least crowded time of the year for moderate weather for outdoor activities. You get to see budding flowerbeds, trees, and lots of lambs and calves playing in the fields and over the hills.

  • Hiking
    Hiking

It is best to go during the tail end of Summer, which leads into autumn, from August to October. The country is undoubtedly at its prettiest then, and the crowds are dying, but the weather is still pleasant.

  • Beach holidays
    Beach holidays

While a trip to the beach on Northern Ireland’s rough and dramatic coast will not be the same as one in Spain, the weather is best during summer from June to August.

Best campervan routes around Belfast

One of the best things to do when you rent a motorhome in Belfast is to explore the many great driving routes from the city around the country.

The Causeway Coastal Route
One of the most spectacular and popular driving routes in all of Ireland is, without a doubt, the Causeway Coastal Route. This stretches for 120 miles and, depending on the pace you wish to explore it, can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days. This route traverses through the rugged Northern Irish coastlines and gives you a chance to drink in the views of the mountain ranges and valleys that artists and writers have taken inspiration from throughout history. The route starts in Belfast and takes you through various towns and villages until you reach the Giant’s Causeway. Along the way, you can experience the nerve-racking Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, which hangs perilously just 30 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. While also enjoying the Antrim Coast with its famous Glens and The Gobbins Cliff path.

Games of Thrones Driving Route
The Game of Thrones Driving Route is another excellent route that starts from Belfast and takes you through many iconic filming locations from the hit HBO Show Game of Thrones based on the series A Song of Ice and Fire. It stretches for 116 miles, and you can spend up to 5 days following it. You can visit the site of King’s Road, Winterfell and many other exciting spots around Westeros. Drive from Belfast through to County Down for Tollymore Forest Park, a 630-hectare forest where the Starks united, the Direwolf pups, and we got our first glimpse of the mythical White Walkers. From there, you can drive to Leitrim Lodge, found at the foot of the stunning Mourne Mountains, which played the part north of Winterfell. Overall, it’s a fabulous journey, even if you aren’t a fan of the show.

Places of interest and excursions in Belfast

The Dark Hedges
The Dark Hedges is a walkway of stunning beech trees the Stuart Family planted in the 18th century. It became the infamous King’s Road in Game of Thrones, which increased its popularity as a tourist destination. Whether you are a fan of the show or not, when you book a motorhome for hire in Belfast and drive down this avenue, you will be transported to another place and time.

Giant’s Causeway
Located in the beautiful northern County Antrim, Giant’s Causeway is famed for its natural beauty and features 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland officially designated it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Nature Reserve. The drive to the Giant's Causeway in a motorhome rental in Belfast is as good as the final destination.

Lough Neagh
Lough Neagh is Britain’s largest lake and is a location steeped in culture, history, and heritage. The lake has a surface area of around 151 square miles, is 9 miles wide, and is 19 miles long. Lough Neagh supplies around 40% of the drinking water in Northern Ireland
