Helpful tips for Your Trip to England
In general, the best time to visit England is when you book a motorhome for hire in England. If you are looking for warmer and dryer weather, it is anytime from May through September. Remember that the English weather can be somewhat unpredictable, and you may not get the sunshine you think you are going to, even if it is forecasted to appear.
- Outdoor activities
You will get more out of your experience if you aim to participate in outdoor activities during summer, between June and August. This is when the days are longest, the sun is warmest, and there is more to see and do.
- Hiking
The best time to go hiking in England depends on the type of experience and how difficult you want to have. If you are not skilled in hiking, try it during spring and summer when the weather is milder. Whereas if you want a challenge, wait until autumn or even winter.
- Beach Holidays
Although you may think you need to go to the coast of England for a beach holiday during summer, that’s not necessarily the case. Any time between May and September will mean you have excellent weather, and if you choose to go more often in autumn, you may miss some of the summer crowds.

Best campervan routes around England
A39 The Atlantic Highway
If you want to adventure in the truest sense of the word when you rent a campervan in England, one route you should consider is the A39, also known as the Atlantic Highway. This route starts in Barnstaple in Devon and takes you to Newquay in Cornwall. From east to west, there is so much dramatic scenery to drink in. The whole route is 77 miles, and depending on how leisurely you approach it, it can take a couple of days to 4 or maybe even 5 to complete.
Buttertubs Pass, Yorkshire Dales
Although it is only 6.8 miles, the 20-minute journey through what is known as Buttertubs Pass in the Yorkshire Dales is challenging. The carriageway gets its peculiar name from the potholes dairy farmers create when they rest before heading to market. There are some exceptionally long, steep climbs and sweeping twists and bends. The reward for your adventurous spirit is the incredible Swaledale and Wensleydale Dale views.
Cat and Fiddle, Peak District
The road from Buxton to Macclesfield, or the Cat and Fiddle, is a scenic route that gets its name from the charming old country pub you reach at the end, which also happens to be the second highest in the country. Be careful, as there are lots of bends on this route, which offers rewarding views of the Peak District National Park, Cheshire Plain, and Greater Manchester.
Kendal to Keswick, Lake District
It is remiss of us to feature campervan in England driving routes and not mention one that takes you into the heart of the Lake District. The A591 is the link between Kendal and Keswick, two of the area’s most prominent towns, so it is extremely popular. At just 30 miles, it still offers stunning scenic viewpoints of Lake Windemere, Thirlmere Reservoir and Grasmere.
Traffic rules in England
In England, you always drive on the left.
Never use or block the middle lane if the inside lane is empty.
When coming to a roundabout, you give way to the traffic approaching on the right.
The speed limits in England are as follows unless signs tell you differently: 30mph in built-up areas, 60mph on single carriageways, and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
When driving a motorhome with a load of more than 3.05 tonnes, the speed limits are 30mph in built-up areas, 50mph on single carriageways, 60mph on dual carriageways and 70mph on motorways.
