Helpful tips for your visit to Milan
Choosing the best time to visit can help when you hire a campervan in Milan. Summer is good for exploring areas like Como and Garda, but it can be busy as it's the peak tourist season. Autumn is nice and still warm, with Milan Fashion Week being in September, which could make a good end to your holiday. Don't overlook winter, as there are the Christmas markets, and the Alps are not far away in a campervan.
- Outdoor activities
While Milan is a big, built-up city, it's not far from areas where you can get out and enjoy the outdoors. The Alps are roughly a four-hour drive, and if you rent a motorhome in Cologne for a week, this could be good as there's plenty of hiking and snow-related sports to try there. Lake Como and Garda are also fantastic, with plenty of opportunities to get out on the water.
- Culture
Italy screams culture at every corner, and Milan is no different. The chances are you will be out of the city for most of your trip, but before you rent a campervan in Milan or fly home, you should check out of the city. The iconic Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) and The Last Supper, located in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, are two things you should check out.
- Local food and drink
Renting a campervan in Milan means you can call at little markets you see along the way and them up in your van. Coffee culture and restaurants are very popular in Italy, and you should make the most of visiting as many as your budget allows during your time here.

Best Campervan routes from Milan
Milan to Lake Como
If you only have the campervan for a weekend, the 50km drive to Lake Como might be a good choice. Follow the A9 motorway out of Milan and stop at some villages if you can. Lake Como will be busy if you are there in the summer months, but that's the same with a lot of Italy. We recommend staying on campsites just outside Lake Garda and away from the main areas, which you could quickly drive into during the day.
Milan to Lake Garda
Sticking with the lakes again, but this time it's Lake Garda. This is a longer drive of 120km that would suit someone who has a bit longer than a weekend. This route follows the A4 motorway, which passes through some beautiful countryside. Garda is the largest lake in Italy, so there is a lot more around the area. One place we recommend you head for on this shore is the town of Sirmione, which has a historic castle and thermal baths, and Riva del Garda, known for its water sports and hiking trails.
Milan to the Dolomites
This is a 300km drive heading northwest on the A4 motorway. On your way there, there are plenty of places to stop at, including Bergamo and Brescia, both known for their local cuisine, and Brescia is known for its Roman and medieval history.
Carry along the A4, and you will reach Verona (the romantic city of Romeo and Juliet), a great little old town to explore. We recommend parking outside the city and walking in or getting a bus. After that, take the A22 motorway towards Trento, then head to Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites. This 300km route will be one you won’t forget.
Places of interest and excursions near Milan
Monza
You could take a 20km drive outside of Milan to Monza, famous for its royal villa and park. The Villa Reale is a stunning neoclassical palace with elegant gardens. Monza Park is one of the largest enclosed parks in Europe and is perfect for a leisurely walk or picnic. You may be thinking that Monza is also famous for something else, and you would be right, its the home of the famous F1 track.
Villa Litta
Just outside Monza, Villa Litta in Lainate is another attraction worth calling. This Renaissance villa is renowned for its beautiful gardens and the spectacular Nymphaeum, an intricate system of water features and mosaics. Guided tours of the villa and gardens are available, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Italian aristocracy.
Cremona
Cremona is a lovely town about 90km outside of Milan, which is possible to drive to in a day. It's perfect for music lovers as it's known for its violin-making tradition. The centre of town is fantastic with plenty of lovely old buildings, including the Torrazzo Tower, which is one of the largest brick buildings in Europe. There are plenty of campsites just outside to stay in.
