Top tips for your Campervan trip to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is full of adventure. December to April is the dry season and probably the best time to rent a motorhome in Costa Rica. May to November can be very wet, and the roads can be muddy. Pack layers, a good waterproof coat, sunscreen, and bug spray (essential).

  • Driving
    Driving
Driving is, how do we say it? A bit more challenging than a lot of other countries. The main roads are fine, but once you venture off the beaten track, expect uneven gravel roads. Take your time along mountain roads, as you never know what's around the next corner.
  • Family Friendly Adventures
    Family Friendly Adventures
Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is a popular choice with over 10 thousand reviews on Trip Advisor. The Sloth Sanctuary goes down well with the whole family, where you can get up close and personal with these fantastic slow-moving animals.
  • The Outdoors
    The Outdoors
Monteverde Cloud Forest is where you will find trails, waterfalls, and wildlife. If you love surfing, Tamarindo or Santa Teresa has some of the best waves you will ever experience, and Tortuguero National Park is the place to go if you like turtles.

Campervan offers for families in Costa Rica

If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Costa Rica, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.

Best Campervan routes in Costa Rica

San José to Manuel Antonio National Park
Theres a good chance you will pick up your motorhome rental in Costa Rica from San José, the country's capital. This route sees you head south towards the coast. Along the way, stop at Tarcoles Bridge, the famous crocodile bridge. It's a free opportunity to get a good view of giant crocodiles. Carry on to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s best places to be out in nature. Check out the white sandy beaches and hike a jungle trail. Just watch out for monkeys who might try to pinch your food.

Liberia to Arenal Volcano
Pick up your campervan in Liberia and head inland towards Arenal Volcano. It's only a short drive but a stunning one with rainforest views. Along the way, you will pass roadside fruit stands selling fresh fruit worth stopping at. Once you arrive at La Fortuna, hike to the waterfall or book some time in the fantastic hot springs. Or, if adventure is more your thing, there are zip lines and white water rafting available in the area.

Puerto Viejo to Tortuguero
Puerto Viejo is on the Carribean coast and is known for its laid-back vibes. Spend a day or two here, then head towards Tortuguero, known for its sea turtles and wildlife. Stop at Cahuita National Park along the way, where you can snorkel amongst coral reefs. Campervan hire in Costa Rica allows you to explore at your own pace.

Driving rules in Costa Rica

  • The alcohol limit is 0.05% BAC (blood alcohol concentration).

  • You cannot use a mobile phone while driving.

  • Drive on the right and overtake on the left.

  • The speed limit on highways is 120 km/h.

  • Everyone must wear a seatbelt.

  • Yellow lines indicate where you are not allowed to overtake.

Sites of interest and excursions in Costa Rica

Poás Volcano National Park
Just 50km outside of San José is Poás Volcano National Park. Once here, it feels like you are on another planet. You can hike right up to the crater rim, which is exciting and scary at the same time. Double-check that it's open, as sometimes the volcano's activity can close the park. Nearby, there are some nice trails you can also take a walk around.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens
If you have ever watched Jurassic Park, visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens. It’s full of jungle trails that take you past five waterfalls, each better than the last. Theres a wildlife rescue centre here that's great for teaching kids about wildlife and a butterfly observatory home to hundreds of species.

Rio Celeste
Rio Celeste is often described as Costa Rica’s best-kept secret. Here, you will find fantastic jungle trails, hanging bridges (don’t look down if you are scared of heights), and a striking blue river due to the volcanic minerals. Park your campervan at one of the nearby campsites and explore the area. If you are after an adventure while staying in your motorhome for hire in Costa Rica, this is the place to head.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Costa Rica
  • We don't recommend you drive at night. The roads often lack clear signage, and a lot of wild animals come out at night. Spend your nights relaxing in your campervan.

  • In the main cities it's okay. However, in remote areas, it can be a struggle at times. Download offline maps, and take a paper map if you can.

  • We recommend drinking bottled water where possible. Although the water is fine, you don’t want to risk having an upset stomach in a campervan with a small portable toilet.

  • Costa Rican mosquitos love tourists. You will want to do a quick sweep of your campervan or motorhome each night before bedtime to make sure your van doesn’t have any in when you go to sleep.
