Valuable Tips for Your Trip to Marseille
The best time for motorhome hire in Marseille is in the summer. However, we advise avoiding the peak season of July and August as it can be too busy and the weather can get very hot. If you want quieter roads but still enjoy the warm weather, then try May, June or September.
- Driving and Parking
Driving around Marseille can be tricky. It is an old city and, therefore, has many narrow roads. There are park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of the city. We recommend these if you are visiting the city during your stay. Parking can also be limited at some attractions (even more so for a motorhome), so always check where you are heading first to avoid disappointment.
- The Calanques
There are famous limestone cliffs and coves all over the Mediterranean coast. Motorhome rental in Marseille is the perfect way to explore these at your own pace. Along these are great walking paths, ideal for stopping off, enjoying the outdoors, and taking pictures.
- Cultural Etiquette
Marseille is a multicultural city, but understanding the local etiquette and customs can go a long way. Locals will appreciate you learning a few phrases. Service can be slower than in other places you may have visited, but that's just the French way and something you must get used to. Tipping is not something you must do, but it is always appreciated.

You could stay here for a night or on straight through to Nice along the coast road where you can spend time exploring the city. Nice isn’t the most accessible place to drive in, so consider stopping on the outskirts and catching public transport into the centre. Best excursions and sites of interest around Marseille
Calanque de Sormiou
If you are interested in the Calanques, Calanque de Sormiou is a great one to visit, as it's just 12 km south of Marseille. Its turquoise waters, sandy beach, and limestone cliffs make it the perfect place to stop with a campervan. You could swim or snorkel or spend the day snapping pictures for Instagram. Parking around here is limited, so arrive early if you visit.
Sainte-Victoire Mountain
Just 30 km outside of Marseille is Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a natural landmark that inspired people such as the post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne. It's an excellent place to park and hike up to the top, as trails suit all abilities. Getting to the top takes about 4 to 5 hours, but you will get great views of the Alps from a distance. The base of the mountain is also suitable for a picnic, and plenty of small villages and vineyards are dotted around. Hikes, picnics, vineyards, and campervans- what else do you want?
Château d'If
Château d’lf is a fortress perched on a small rocky island off the coast of Marseille that rose to fame in The Count of Monte Cristo. It was built back in 1524 to protect Marseille from naval attacks. Nowadays, it's a popular tourist attraction that can only be reached by ferry. You can visit the old prison cells and get fantastic views of the area. We recommend you see here at the end of your campervan trip when you have dropped the campervan off.
