Top tips for your Campervan trip to Nevada
Nevada’s weather can be extreme, so make sure you plan accordingly. Temperatures in the desert can reach 40 degrees, but it has been known to snow in the winter. The chances are it will be hot, but bring layers as it can get a bit cold at night.
- Driving
The roads are big, and most of Nevada doesn’t have much traffic. Some roads off the beaten track might be rocky, so make sure it is equipped for this when you rent a motorhome in Nevada. Nevada has some long roads without petrol stations, so top up where you can and keep an eye on your fuel gauge.
- Family Friendly Activities
The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Hotel always goes down well with children. Red Rock Canyon is another popular choice, just 30 minutes from Las Vegas, and has some nice hiking trails. If you are heading north, Lake Tahoe is perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and picnicking by the water.
- The Outdoors
Just an hour outside Las Vegas is Mount Charleston, which offers a break from the heat with its forest and hiking trails. If you're heading north, Lamoile Canyon is a hidden attraction that doesn’t get the crowds that some places do.
Campervan offers for couples in Nevada
For a romantic trip for two exploring Nevada and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.
Campervan offers for families in Nevada
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Nevada, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best Campervan routes from Nevada
The Extraterrestrial Highway
It's a must-do for UFO fans, conspiracy theorists, and anyone who loves a good road trip with a weird twist. If you rent a campervan in Nevada, this drive is even better. This route along Nevada’s Highway 375 runs past Area 51, one of the most secretive military bases in the world, fueling decades of alien rumours. The drive along it is full of alien-themed shops and roadside diners for you to call at. Stop at Little A’Le’Inn, the most famous UFO-themed cafe and motel, and pick up a souvenir from your trip. After that, stop at the town of Rachel, which has the Black Mailbox where UFO hunters gather, hoping to see something special.
The Loneliest Road in America (Ely to Carson City)
If you want a scenic driver over 500km, then US Route 50 (AKA the Loneliest Road in America) could be your kind of road trip. This route stretches right across the middle of Nevada. Start in Ely, an old town with its roots in mining and a lovely preserved historic railway track where you can ride a steam train. After that, there is a chance you won’t see anyone for a long time (make sure you take plenty of water). Stop at Austin for a break, a tiny town that was a silver boomtown in the 1860s. End your trip in Carson City, the capital of Nevada, where you can check out the Nevada State Museum or head to the nearby Lake Tahoe. Campervan hire in Nevada makes this better than just hiring a car.
Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park
One of the road trips should start from Las Vegas, as it's probably where you will pick up your camper van for hire in Nevada. We recommend you take the route to Great Basin National Park, one of Nevada’s underrated natural wonders. Head north along the US-93 through remote areas. Along the way, stop at Pioche, which looks like something out of the Wild West. As you carry on towards Great Basin National Park, you will notice the landscape change, with forests starting to replace the desert. Once there, check out Lehman Caves, which will be like something you’ve never seen before.
Sites of interest and excursions in Nevada
Tonopah (The Best Stargazing Place in America)
Head to Tonopah, where the night sky is brighter than the town. It’s possible to see the Milky Way with the naked eye, and theres is even an official Tonopah Star Trails Park, where you can park up your campervan, set up a chair, and just stare at the sky.
Goldfield (A Real Ghost Town)
Once a booming gold rush town with a population of over 20,000, it’s now home to empty saloons and crumbling buildings. The Goldfield Hotel is where you want to head to. It’s said to be one of the most haunted places, with visitors reporting stranger whispers and even things moving on their own. Don’t worry, we hear ghosts don’t like campervans.
The Clown Motel (Yes, Really)
Sitting next to an old cemetery, this motel houses hundreds of clone statues with some full-on life-sized clowns. Stop and pick up a souvenir, but don't stop over in one of the rooms (though if you do, expect a room decorated with clowns). It's worth a stop for a selfie or two.

Most rentals will allow you to cross state lines, but double-check your rental agreement to be sure.
Even though this is California, it's right on the state boundary. If you’ve got a motorhome for hire in Nevada, it's a tempting trip because it's the hottest place on earth, but some campervan providers might not allow it. Temperatures can reach over 50°C. If you do go, take extra water and don’t rely on a phone signal.
Nevada has many free camping places, especially on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. Just be respectful and clean up after yourself.
Generally, but watch out for wildlife in remote areas that might stray onto the road. Their highways are pitch black at night, so we recommend travelling during the day if possible.
