Top tips for your campervan trip to Faro
The Algarve area enjoys excellent weather all year round. The best time to visit with a campervan is during the spring when it's still warm but slightly cooler. The main peak season can also be busy, especially around Lagos and Albufeira.
- Driving in Faro
The motorways in Portugal are marked as “A” roads. Some motorways in Portugal are toll roads, so that is something to keep in mind, but whoever you rent the van from can advise on these. Most campsites cater well to campervans with electric hook-ups, showers, and swimming pools.
- The Outdoors
You could head to the Ria Formosa Natural park, a beautiful coastal lagoon stretching over 60km. The Praia de Marinha is one of the best beaches, with golden cliffs and turquoise water. If mountains are more your thing, then the Monchique Mountains are perfect for a hike.
- Family Friendly Activities
Zoomarine Algarve, not far from Albufeira, is one of the Algarve's best attractions. There is also Lago Marina, which has boat trips that leave every day, and you can get the chance to see dolphins in the wild. Slide and Splash Park is a popular choice with families, only 50km outside Faro. It has something for kids of all ages and even an animal show.
Best campervan routes in Faro
Faro to Lisbon (Coastal Route)
Theres no better road trip in Portugal than to pick up your motorhome rental in Faro and follow the coastline. You get to see random places to stop at that and fantastic views. It's a 300km drive that heads north of Faro. You could break it up over a few days to make the most of it. Stop at fishing villages such as Vila de Milfontes or check out the beautiful beaches of Comporta. Park up and stay just outside the centre of Lisbon if you can, as driving around it in a campervan could be challenging.
Faro to the Douro Valley
If you have your motorhome for a longer period and want a real adventure, then the 500km drive to the Douro Valley could be for you. This route will take you from sunny beaches to the green hills of northern Portugal, known for its terraced vineyards that grow along the Douro River. It's a good route to see what Portugal offers with several locations to call at. Pinhão and Peso da Régua are two places we recommend calling at, as these are less touristy than the Algarve and Lisbon.
Faro to Serra da Estrela
Campervans and the outdoors go hand in hand. The Faro to Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in Portugal, and the journey to get here is roughly 400km. If you are hiring your campervan during winter, it is one of the rare places in Portugal where you can experience snow, and they even have a small ski resort.
Sites of interest and excursions in Faro
Silves
Silves is just 60km outside Faro, the perfect destination if you only have a campervan for an overnight stay. Silves is a place full of history, with the castle being one of the best-preserved castles in Portugal. If you visit in August, try to time your visit with the Silves Medieval Festival, where they reenact battles and people dress up.
Tavira
Tavira is just on the outskirts of Faro and is often called one of the Algarve's most picturesque towns. It could make the ideal first stop after picking up your campervan, where you could stop for some pictures or local delicacies. There are plenty of campsites nearby, which is a popular destination for campervans.
Ria Formosa Natural Park
We briefly mentioned this earlier on, but it deserves its own section. Ria Formosa Natural Park is a stunning natural area home to salt marshes, islands and wildlife. If you love birdwatching, you will see species you have never seen before. There are also hiking and cycling trails that run through the park. You can even take boat tours to visit some islands dotted across the park.

You may think you can park by the beach and spend the night, but it is restricted, especially in coastal areas. It’s best to stay at designated campsites/
Many people like to combine their trip to Portugal by hopping across the border into Spain. Most rental companies will allow you to do this, but it's best to check with your provider before you travel.
Most campsites in the popular tourist areas are open all year round. Some in the more remote areas will close, so it's always important to check before you travel. We always recommend pre-booking any campsite in advance before you pick up your motorhome for hire in Faro.
