Top tips for your Campervan trip to The Algarve

The weather in the Algarve is stunning, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. It is a popular destination, and it can get busy during the summer, but if you hire a campervan in the Algarve, you can escape some of the busy areas and explore the unexplored.

  • Driving
    Driving

The roads are well maintained, and traffic is usually light - except when you get stuck behind a tractor on a country road (which will happen at some point). If you’ve arranged campervan hire in the Algarve, you’ll want to be aware of the electronic toll roads. The chances are your motorhome rental company will include a Via Verde toll tag, making it easier for you.

  • Family Friendly-Activities
    Family Friendly-Activities

There's the Zoomarine with dolphins, water slides and animal shows. It's a place that's part marine park and part water park that kids (and adults) will love. Benagil Caves is also good. You can take a boat tour to one of Portual’s most famous sea caves and even kayak or paddleboard inside.

  • The Outdoors

Even though the Algarve is known for its beaches, theres much more to it than that. If you want a break from the beach, head inland to Serra de Monchique and visit the fantastic lush green mountains. Ponta de Piedade is also worth checking out, as it looks like something out of a postcard with its turquoise water, rock arches and limestone cliffs.

Best Campervan routes from The Algarve

The Algarve to Lisbon
This 300km road trip takes you from the sun-soaked beaches to the capital. It's an incredible drive along the coast with some lovely little towns. If you rent a motorhome in the Algarve, you’ll be free to stop wherever takes your fancy. Stop at Odeceixe, a town with one of The Algarve's prettiest beaches. If you are into surfing, take a break at Arrifna Beach, where the waves are world-class, and the seafood is even better.

After that, pass through Sines, the birthplace of Vasco de Gama, Portugal's most famous explorer, where theres is a castle and maritime museum.

The Algarve to Seville
Portugal is quite a narrow country and shares a land border with Spain, so why not visit two countries in one holiday? You can be at Seville, the fiery heart of Andalusia, in just a few hours (200km). Along the way, stop at Rivira, an old town with cobblestone streets, tiled churches and a river running through the centre. Drive over the Guadiana International Bridge, the official gateway to tapas, siestas, and flamenco.

The Algarve to Porto
This ultimate Portuguese road trip takes you south to north along the country’s most beautiful landscapes. If you rent a campervan in the Algarve, you’ll have the flexibility to explore at your own pace, making scenic stops along the way. Stop at Lisbon, ride tram 28 and get lost in the Alfama district. After that, stop at Coimbra, home to one of the world's oldest universities, medieval streets and student energy. Finally, arrive in Porto (a city that's just as cool as Lisbon), but with fewer crowds and more wine.

Sites of interest and excursions in The Algarve

Cape St. Vincent
Cape St. Vincent isn’t just a scenic lookout - it's the edge of Europe. Before explorers started sailing across the Atlantic, people thought this was the last piece of land before falling off the planet. Thankfully, we know better, but standing on these cliffs still feels like the end of the world. If you time it right, you will get to see some of the most spectacular sunsets in Portugal.

Silves Castle
Built in the 8th century, this castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Portugal, and you can still walk along its fortress walls for some fantastic panoramic views over the rolling countryside. As well as the castle, the town is worth exploring. Grab a coffee in one of the town squares and check out the impressive Gothic cathedral.

Praia da Marinha
This isn’t just one of the best beaches in Portugal - it's been ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It's the kind of place that doesn’t need a filter because it looks straight out of a screensaver. With a campervan for hire in the Algarve, you can park nearby and walk down the steep staircase to the beach.

FAQs for Campervan Hire in The Algarve
  • Not anyone. A few years ago, you could park up pretty much anywhere, but new rules mean wild camping is now banned in most places. There are plenty of official campervan parks and campsites, so stick to those to avoid getting a fine.

  • Many people drive from the Algarve to Seville in a campervan. Just check with your rental company to make sure cross-border travel is included.

  • Let’s just say they love speed and late braking. Be extra careful at roundabouts, and don’t be surprised if someone overtakes you on a twisty road like they’re in a car chase. Just take your time and let them zoom past.

  • Generally, yes - but lock everything up and don’t leave valuables in sight. The Algarve is safe, but leaving valuables in sight is just an invitation to trouble anywhere in the world.
