Top tips for your Campervan trip to Porto

A little planning will make your trip even better. If you’re visiting in July or August, be ready for hot days with plenty of sunshine, while spring and autumn offer nicer temperatures with fewer crowds. Porto’s food scene is legendary, so try a Francesinha sandwich and don’t miss the sunset at Dom Luis I Bridge.

  • Driving
    Driving

Driving in northern Portugal is easy, as most roads are well-maintained. Some streets will be narrow in the older towns, especially in historic areas. Therefore, leave your campervan just on the town outskirts and walk or catch a bus into the town centres. Check with your rental company to see if they can include a toll device to make payments easier, or you can buy a prepaid toll card.

  • Family friendly activities
    Family friendly activities

If you have the kids with you on your campervan adventure, they won’t get bored. World of Discoveries is an interactive museum that's a hit with families. Sea Life can be found at Matosinhos Beach (just 10km outside of Porto), which is always fun for the whole family.

  • The Outdoors
    The Outdoors

One of the most popular places is the Douro Valley, full of vineyards and wine-tasting experiences. If you prefer to be more active, Peneda-Gerês National Park is only 100km outside Porto and could make a great stop after you leave the city.

Best Campervan routes from Porto

Travel routes

Porto to Coimbra and Serra da Estrela
This journey has it all, and it only takes about 3 hours of driving (230km in total), but it could be broken up into 2 days if you want a slow pace of life. This route takes you from the coast north into Portugal's mountainous region. If you’re planning campervan hire in Porto, this trip is ideal. Coimbra should be your first stop as it's one of Portugal's oldest cities, with a university dating back to 1290. If you are a book lover, check out Joanina Library. After leaving Coimbra, head towards Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range, about 120km southeast of Coimbra.

Porto to Lisbon via the Silver Coast
Theres nothing better than a road trip that runs along the coast through coastal towns and pretty beaches. Even though this route isn’t the longest (300km), we recommend you break it up over a few days. Stop at Óbidos, a walled town and a great example of a well-preserved medieval city. After that, stop at Peniche, a fishing town known for having some of the best surfing in Portugal. Finally, before you arrive in Lisbon, stop at the fairytale town of Sintra, known for its palaces and castles.

Porto to The Algarve
For a more extended road trip, you could drive down to the Algarve, a journey of 550km, but like the other trips we mentioned, you should break it up over several days. Take the A1 motorway towards Évora (this will be your first stop). It's a lovely historic city in which to spend the day. After that, continue south to the Algarve, where you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches and little coastal towns. If you’re looking for a motorhome for hire in Porto, this route is ideal for exploring the coastline at your own pace.

Sites of interest and excursions in Porto

Aveiro
Aveiro is a fantastic little place. It’s often called the Venice of Portugal and is about 75km outside Porto. The town is famous for its colourful moliceiro boats, once used to collect seaweed. Now, they are used as canal tour boats for the many tourists that visit every year. Make sure you check out Ovo Moles, which is a sweet egg-based dessert wrapped in wafer shells.

Guimarães
Guimarães is 55km outside of Porto, and it is a place which has a special place in Portuguese history, as it is the birthplace of Portugal. Guimarães Castle is the area's highlight, as it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles you will ever visit. You can spend the day pottering around the historic Guimarães centre, where you will find narrow streets and old squares to have a coffee and watch the world go by.

Vila do Conde
Found 25km outside Porto is Vila do Conde, a charming little coastal town with plenty of maritime history. One of the best places to visit in the town is the Santa Clara Monastery, perched high up on a hill, which is the perfect place to get a picture for Instagram. If you visit in the summer, check out Praia de Vila do Conde, a big, wide sandy beach where you can spend the day.
