Top tips for your Campervan trip to Edmonton
Edmonton’s weather can sometimes feel similar to the UK - meaning it changes every 5 minutes. One minute, it's sunny; before you know it, the rains will lash down. If you rent a campervan in Edmonton in the summer, there will be long days with plenty of sunshine, but still, pack a light jacket so you don’t get caught out. It can get cold in winter, with temperatures dropping to as low as -16 degrees in January.
- Driving
If you read Reddit, they will say that driving in Edmonton is awful, but honestly, it's not as bad as driving in a lot of major cities across the world. The advice is to avoid rush hour, but you can do that quite easily in a campervan.
- Family Friendly-Activities
There are loads to do with the family in and around Edmonton. Telus World of Science is good if you have a few rainy days and want something indoors. World Waterpark is always a hit with the kids (and adults), and if you love shopping, then theres is the West Edmonton Mall, which has something to keep everyone entertained.
- The Outdoors
Elk Island National Park is one of the most popular outdoor attractions in the area, and you can get up close to Bison and Elk. Rabbit Hill Snow Resort has over 40 acres of trails for you to try your hand at and is located just along the river outside the city.
Best Campervan routes from Edmonton
Edmonton to Jasper National Park
The journey from Edmonton to Jasper National Park is roughly 360km long and can quickly be done in one day. Roll down your window, put on your favourite Spotify playlist and enjoy the fantastic scenery along the way before you read the Canadian Rockies. If you can, stop at the town of Hinton along the way to stretch your legs. They have a beaver boardwalk, a path through forests where you might see a real-life beaver. After that, carry on to Jasper National Park, where you will get amazing views of Maligne Lake and Athabasca Falls. Don’t forget to take the Jasper SkyTram up to the top of the mountains for an epic selfie.
Edmonton to Banff National Park
There is a lot of debate online about which is better - Banff or Jasper. Hire a campervan in Edmonton and do both if you have time. Edmonton to Banff is a true Canadian road trip classic full of amazing views and fun little stops before you arrive in one of the most famous national parks in the world. Red Deer is a good stop along the way. They have a renowned doughnut shop to call at which people make a detour as they are that good. After that, you could stop at Calgary and stay the night. After you leave Calgary, you see the Rocky Mountains; the air becomes fresher, and the lakes are bluer. Park up your campervan, make a coffee and soak up that crisp mountain air.
Edmonton to Cold Lake
Edmonton to Cold Lake is a scenic 290km drive that will take you through small towns' rolling prairies and eventually end up at a picturesque lake. Along the way, you could call at Elk Island, only 45 minutes outside Edmonton. After that, you could stop at Bonnyville, a town famous for fishing. Once you arrive at Cold Lake, you could either go kayaking or swimming or find a nice campsite alongside the lake. If you are here in the winter, know there is a chance the lake will freeze over.
Sites of interest and excursions in Edmonton
Fort Edmonton Park
It's a place to understand about Edmonton and its heritage. There is a steam train to ride on, a must for any visitor. It takes you to the back of the park so you can work your way back. All the streets are constructed from different periods with authentic buildings and structures, and people are dressed in attire from the different periods. If you are on a road trip, this is a great place to learn about the area's history.
World Waterpark
World Waterpark is located just on the city's outskirts, so it might be a good stop on the way back with your motorhome rental in Edmonton. It’s a place the whole family will love, as the fun isn’t just for children, with people calling it the best waterpark in Canada. Even if the slides are not your thing, there are plenty of hot tubs, swimming pools you can relax in, and even a few recliners.
Strathcona Science Provincial Park
Located just 15km outside of Edmonton, its an excellent place for those who love the outdoors while not having to travel miles outside of the city. The old science centre has now gone from here, but the park itself is perfect for hiking and biking along the North Saskatchewan River.
