Top tips for your Campervan trip to Massachusetts
Massachusetts is one of those places where every season brings something different. Summers are perfect for coastal drives, stopping at seafood shacks. Autumn is when the whole state turns a fantastic colour, and winter can bring snow to the western part.
- Driving
Coastal roads like Route 6 in Cape Cod or Route 127 are breathtaking, but watch for sharp turns and other vehicles. If you end up in Boston (where you will likely pick up your motorhome for hire in Massachusetts from), then be prepared for impatient drivers and bad traffic, but you will probably be heading straight out or picking up your campervan on the outskirts.
- Family friendly-activities
The Boston Children’s Museum always goes down well, it's full of hands-on interactive exhibits that make learning fun. If your family is more outdoorsy, then Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary in Lincoln is perfect, where you can meet the animals, and watch live demonstrations.
- The Outdoors
The Berkshires are where everyone heads to for the best mountain views with trails like Mount Greylock (the highest peak in the state) and Bash Bish Falls - a great waterfall with a shorter walk. Cape Cod National Seashore is where you’ll find beaches, dunes and lighthouses. You could take a ferry to Natucket if you want an island adventure.
Campervan offers for families in Massachusetts
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Massachusetts, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best Campervan routes from Massachusetts
Boston to The Berkshires
This is a lovely 250km drive that mountain lovers and art fans will like. Rent a motorhome in Massachusetts, head West along the I-90, and call at Northampton, a quirky little town full of bookshops, live music, and other boutique shops. After that, stop at Stockbridge, home to the Norman Rockwell Museum where you can check out his artwork. After that, you could drive into Mount Greylock State Reservation. Make your final stop at North Adams, a small but artsy town with some of the best museums in the country.
Boston to Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket
Adding a bit of island hopping into a road trip is always fun. When you rent a campervan in Massachusetts, you can get to places that others can’t. This road trip starts in Boston and heads towards Cape Cod. From there, head to Woods Hole, where you’ll catch the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Once on the island, you can check out all the little seaside villages and lighthouses perfect for snapping on Instagram. You could then catch another ferry to Nantucket, a small, famous, adorable island.
Springfield to Mohawk & Mounts Greylock
This is only a short 220km route, but it's packed with things to do. Springfield has loads to do before you leave (Basketball Hall of Fame and the Dr. Seuss Museum). After heading out onto the Mohawk Trail, a lovely scenic drive, stop in Shelburne Falls and take a picture by the Bridge of Flowers. Carry to Mount Greylock, where you can drive up to the summit and see five different states. This route has it all.
Sites of interest and excursions in Massachusetts
Salem
When you think of Salem, you probably think of Witches, and you would be right. This is officially known as New England’s spookiest town, famous for the 1692 witch trials and the town fully embraces its eerier past. Check out the Salem Witch Museum and the Witch House, the only building still standing with direct ties to the trial. Apart from the spooky stuff, it's a cool town full of charm. If you visit in October, be prepared for the best Halloween experience ever.
Cape Ann & Rockport
Everyone's heard of Cape Cod, but you can still get fantastic sea views if you want to escape the crowds. Cape Anne is only an hour's drive from Boston but has excellent seafood, beaches and harbours which are perfect for campervan adventure. Stop at Gloucester, check out the Fisherman's Memorial, and grab a lobster roll (because you have to, right?). Then head up to Rockport with its famous red fishing shack. After that, drive along the coastal roads and enjoy the traffic-free roads.
Mount Wachusett State Reservation
If you are after somewhere for a quick escape, head to Mount Wachusett, only about 90 minutes outside of Boston. It's where you will find the tallest mountain outside of The Bekrshires. Take the Harrington trail to the summit for a picture of Boston's skyline on a clear day. As mentioned earlier, you can also drive up, which would be our favourite option. It turns into a ski resort if you are here in the winter.
