Affordable Campervan hire in Texas
Texas is the second largest state in the United States, where the open roads stretch for miles with campervan adventures in every direction. The landscape ranges from desert canyons to rolling hills and sun-soaked beaches, making it the perfect destination for a campervan road trip.
When you fly in, you will probably be landing in one of the major cities such as Austin, Dallas or Houston, so that's where we will focus on as starting points. Texas is well equipped with campsites, state parks and private sites, most of which will offer electric hookups and amenities.
Cheap campervan hire in Texas is possible with CamperDays. Our platform connects you with local providers with whom we have agreed the best possible prices. There is an extensive range of vehicles for you, and our website lets you filter by different options.

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Texas
If you are planning a trip in the summer, be prepared for it to be hot, especially in the west and desert regions. Temperatures regularly exceed 35°C (95°F). Therefore, we recommend to hire a campervan in Texas during spring or autumn. Autumn is perfect for hiking in Hill Country and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
- Driving
Texas is bigger than you think (bigger than some countries), so some destinations might be further away than you think. Always check your route and fuel up when you can, as petrol stations might be limited in rural areas. Book ahead as much as possible when picking your campsites.
- Family Friendly Activities
One of the best places is the Houston Space Centre, where children can get up close with interactive exhibits, meet astronauts and check out some real rockets. Natural Bridge Caverns are also a good choice. They offer a guided tour that takes you deep underground to explore some impressive rock formations that will make memories that last a lifetime.
- The Outdoors
We will discuss the outdoors more later, but a few key areas to mention are the Big Bend National Park, which can be found in West Texas. Skygazers will love it, as the stars here look amazing at night. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is another place worthy of mentioning, with its massive pink granite dome that makes it an excellent place to take pictures.
Campervan offers for families in Texas
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Texas, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best Campervan routes from Texas
Austin to Big Bend National Park
We will give you three road trips, one from each of the main cities in Texas. The first is a 600km route through rugged West Texas. Have a day in Austin and enjoy the city, then head out, stopping at Fredericksburg, a unique little town with some German heritage. After that, the scenery will change into a desert landscape before you reach Big Bend National Park. Once there, drive along Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive for great views across the park, kayak on the Rio Grande or hike the Santa Elena Canyon.
Dallas to Palo Duro Canyon
This is another long drive at 500km that goes through the Texas Panhandle. After picking up your camper van for hire in Texas, this journey will take you through wide-open plains dotted with small historic towns that feel like you are stepping back in time. Stop at as many of these as you can, and if possible, stay overnight at one to break up the journey. Once in Palo Duro Canyon State Park (known as the Grand Canyon of Texas), you could hike along the Lighthouse Trail or take a horseback ride.
Houston to Padre Island National Seashore
If you want a drive to the coast, take the 350km drive from Houston to Padre Island National Seashore, a stretch of beach that runs along the Gulf of Mexico. Roughly halfway, we recommend stopping at Corpus Christi, a city on the sea. If you have children with you, they will love the Texas State Aquarium, which can be found here. You can also take a tour of the USS Lexington, a retired aircraft that now serves as a museum. Once at Padre Island National Seashore, you’ll find over 70 miles of coastline perfect for birdwatching, fishing, or just relaxing by the sea.
Sites of interest and excursions in Texas
The Alamo
The Alamo is a former fortress famous for the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, where a small group of Texan defenders faced overwhelming odds during the fight for independence from Mexico. Here, you can visit the grounds, explore interactive exhibits and check out artefacts. The Alamo is an excellent choice if you want to learn more about Texas and its history. It’s in the city of San Antonio, which is worth exploring while you are there as well.
Cadilac Ranch
This one is so different that we had to include it. It’s not worth making a massive detour, but it's worth checking out if you are near Amarillo. It's a public art installation featuring a line of half-buried Cadillacs buried nose-first into the ground. Over time, people have transformed these with their artwork, and you can have a go yourself if you take a can of spray paint. Cadillac Ranch is also a place that defines freedom and creativity, which is all part of having a road trip in America.
Hamilton Pool Preserve
Just outside of Austin is Hamilton Pool Preserve, one of Texas's most beautiful natural areas. Steep cliffs surround it, and has a fantastic waterfall that falls into emerald-green waters. It's the perfect place to cool off if you are struggling with the heat. This place can be very popular, so you must prebook to get access.

Texas has more toll roads than many other states, especially in the big cities of Dallas, Austin and Houston. Your rental provider will likely be able to provide you with a pass for these.
You can wild camp on land owned by the Bureau of Land Management, but always take your rubbish home and leave no trace of being there. We recommend you plan ahead when you book your motorhome for hire in Texas and stay in dedicated campsites.
You might come across deer, raccoons, snakes and coyotes. Just make sure you keep your food waste locked up to avoid attracting them.
