Top tips for your trip to Alicante
Like most parts of Spain, Alicante is blessed with fantastic yearly weather. However, the peak summer months of July and August can sometimes be a bit hot to handle, especially in a campervan. Spring and Autumn would be the best times to visit. They are when the summer crowds have died down, but it's still warm enough to enjoy the outdoors. The pleasant temperatures will be better for sleeping at night, sightseeing, and also driving.
- Driving in Alicante
The roads in Alicante are easy to drive around, but parking can be tricky, especially in the city's heart. The best bet is to park outside the city and catch a bus into the city. The chances are that you will spend most of your time outside of the town exploring the surrounding areas.
- Nature and Outdoor activities
One of the most popular areas is the nearby Sierra de Mariloa mountain range, where you can do great hikes on fantastic trails through stunning landscapes. The El Hondo Nature Reserve is also another great choice if you’re planning to rent a campervan in Alicante and take your adventures further.
- Family friendly activities
One of the most popular places to head to is Terra Mítica, one of Spain’s largest theme parks and only 40 minutes outside Alicante. Mundomar, a marine and animal park, is another great choice with dolphin shows, sea lions and exotic birds. The Playa del Postiguet, the main beach in the city, is also great for the whole family and is the perfect place for a day of sun, sand, and sea.
Campervan offers for couples in Alicante
For a romantic trip for two exploring Alicante and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.
Campervan offers for families in Alicante
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Alicante, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best campervan routes in Alicante
Alicante to Granda (Via Murcia and Sierra Navada National Park)
Granada is about 350 kilometres from Alicante, but this route takes you through Murcia and the Sierra Nevada National Park. Murcia is a city not to be missed, as it has a lovely cathedral and markets. After that, you will pass through the Sierra Nevada National Park, an excellent place to stop for hiking or just enjoy the views. Afterwards, head to Granada, a place full of history and architecture. This is a great route that takes in a bit of everything that Spain has to offer, especially if you rent a motorhome in Alicante for the journey.
Alicante to Valencia
Alicante to Valencia is a shorter 180km drive. Some would say it's worth the 180km just to taste paella in the place that is called the home of paella. However, the drive is a lovely one. You could call at Albufera Natural Park, which is just outside of Valencia. This coastal lagoon is the perfect place for nature lovers, where you could take a boat ride or do some bird watching. It's a perfect two-day drive.
Alicante to Madrid (Via Albacete and Cuenca)
Spain is a big country—a lot bigger than people think. Therefore, if you want a Spanish road trip to remember, you could take the 420-kilometer drive through some fantastic landscapes to Madrid. Along the way, you could call at the cities of Albacete and Cuenca and spend a night at one of them. Then, with your campervan hire in Alicante, park up outside the city of Madrid and enjoy a day or two exploring this city before heading back to Alicante.
Sites of interest and excursions in Alicante
Castillo de Santa Bárbara
This is probably one of the most famous landmarks in Alicante, as it overlooks the city on top of Mount Benacantil. It’s a great place to get some photographs overlooking the city and the coastline. You can drive your campervan part of the way up, but the final part requires walking. This is one of the sites of interest we feel everyone visiting the city must look at.
Canelobre Caves
The Canelobre Caves are one of the largest cave systems in Spain, and they are a nice, easy drive just over 20km outside of the city. The cathedral-like caverns feature stunning stalagmites and stalactites, and the acoustics are so remarkable that concerts are sometimes held inside. The caves are easy to access, with a motorhome for hire in Alicante, with parking available nearby.
Font Roja Natural Park
Located around 55 kilometres outside Alicante, Font Roja Natural Park is one of the region’s most beautiful and untouched natural areas. The park features a mix of forests, viewpoints, and trails, perfect for those who love the outdoors. It’s an excellent destination for campervan travellers who want to escape the coastal areas and experience the rugged landscapes of inland Spain. There are parking areas at the entrance of the park.

When you pick up your campervan in Alicante, you need to know that some motorways in Spain are toll roads, especially along the coastal routes. The AP-7 runs along the Costa Blanca and has tolls in certain sections. Be sure to carry some cash or a credit card for toll payments, or plan alternative routes if you prefer to avoid them.
Spain has good road infrastructure, and driving a campervan is generally safe. However, be aware of narrow streets in older towns and villages, and always check local parking regulations before leaving your campervan.
