Honorata Bochenski - UX Designer | Poland

The most popular tourist destinations in Poland are Kraków, Zakopane with its picturesque Tatra trails, and Gdańsk. However, Poland hides less known regions that can enchant any visitor. One such place is Lower Silesia, home to mountain ranges like the Karkonosze and Izerskie Mountains. Although the region was recently hit by a flood, it remains a highly attractive tourist destination. Hiking through scenic trails, camping near mountain lodges, and savoring local cuisine, including the famous oscypek cheese, make a camper trip around Lower Silesia an unforgettable experience at any time of the year. And if you’re in the mood for some urban energy, Wrocław – the city of a hundred bridges – awaits with its rich history and charming spots.

Essential pointers for your trip to Poland

The best for motorhome rental in Poland is June through to August; the temperatures are warm and ideal for seeing this country's beautiful scenery, and you can make the most of outdoor activities. Poland has a continental climate, so the summers are generally very temperate, but the winters are cold, sometimes extremely cold. The national parks in Poland all have longer opening hours in the summer, and you can camp and hike, which is impossible in the snowy winters. The summer months are also an excellent time to explore the Polish Baltic coastline, which is little known and has lagoons, lakes, and white sand, which is a surprise.

Explore the picturesque lakes of Masuria, also known as the Land of 1,000 Lakes, the Baltic coastline and the magnificent Karkonosze Mountains. It's usually easy to find designated areas for campervan parking, but cities have restrictions.

  • The Great Outdoors
    The Great Outdoors

The countryside is peaceful and still relatively underdeveloped thanks to the blanket of Communism from 1947 to 1989. Interspersed with the halcyon rural scene are geographically distinct areas ranging from mountains to coastline. It's an ideal location to indulge a passion for walking or outdoor activities like cycling, fishing, kayaking, mountaineering, or just enjoying the scenery.

  • History and Culture
    History and Culture

Sandwiched between Germany and Russia, Poland has a fascinating history and a rich cultural heritage. Poland has a legacy dating back to the medieval period and earlier and is home to many UNESCO World Heritage sites. Areas damaged or destroyed during the Second World War have now had time to recover once the country received its independence in 1989 from Soviet rule, and Poland is reconnecting with its illustrious and proud legacy.

Best campervan routes in Poland

Warsaw to Gdansk
When you hire a campervan in Poland, you could drive from the Polish capital, Warsaw, to Gdansk on the coast, which is 416 kilometres and takes between three and four hours on the E30 and E75. Midway between the two locations is Toruń, just 15 minutes from the main road and one of Poland's oldest cities. Situated on the Vistula River, Toruń is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Oswald Balzer Road
This route runs from Zakopane to Morskie Oko, but only part is accessible to traffic - the section from Zakopane to Palenica Białczańska, 22.5 kilometres on the 960 and 961. Enjoy stunning landscapes with views of the Tatra Mountains and the Gorce Mountains, part of the Western Beskids.

The Great Bieszczady Loop
Built in the 1960s, this route runs from Lesko through Ustrzyki Dolne to Czarna, Lutowiska, Ustrzyki Górne, and then further to Cisna, from where it returns to Lesko. The loop is 147 kilometres and runs through spectacular scenery and four landscape parks on roads 893,897, 896, 895 and 84. The drive takes about six hours.

Sites of interests and excursions in Poland

Białowieża National Park
Białowieża National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Europe, is in Eastern Poland, adjacent to the border with Belarus. It is UNESCO-listed and home to one of Europe's last primaeval forests, and where visitors can see Europe's only wild bison population in the Demonstration Reserve and the perfect place for a motorhome for hire in Poland.

Krakow and the Wieliczka Salt Mine Complex
Whilst Warsaw is the actual capital of Poland, the historic centre remains as Krakow with Europe's largest market square and numerous medieval buildings, a real fusion of west meets east. Krakow fared better than Warsaw during the Second World War as Allied bombers largely avoided it, and it was not destroyed by the Nazis when they left; hardly surprising that it is Poland's most popular tourist destination. Just fourteen kilometres southeast of Krakow is the world's oldest salt mine.

Słowiński Sand Dunes
Part of the Słowiński National Park on Poland's Baltic coast in the north of the country, these moving dunes cover 500 hectares and travel along the 32 kilometres of beautiful shoreline throughout the year, depending on the impact of the wind and the tides. The dunes move as much as 10 metres a year.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Poland
  • When you drive a campervan In Poland, headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day. Parking in national parks overnight is prohibited and wild camping is also illegal. In cities, you can drive in tram lanes but must vacate them if a tram is approaching. Generally, motorhomes and campervans are welcomed with some places offering designated parking. Take care on rural roads which are often in poor condition.

  • Main roads and highways are generally well-surfaced, but there is a lot of lorry traffic as Poland is a transit country for haulage from west to east. Rural roads can be rutted and have potholes, and you will often encounter horse-drawn vehicles.

  • There are toll roads, but unlike other European countries, there is no electronic vignette system, so you must pay manually at toll booths on the A1, A2, and A4 roads.
