Top tips for your Campervan trip to Tuscany
The best time to hire a campervan in Tuscany is either side of the primary summer season. This is only because it's busy all year round but extremely busy in the summer.
- Driving
Even though it's a dream to drive around Tuscany in a campervan, it also comes with restrictions. This is partly because many older cities and towns are tiny, making driving challenging. Another is because a lot of the historical city centres have ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones)
- Family Friendly-Activities
Outside Siena is Parco Avventura Il Gigante, a treetop adventure park with zip lines and climbing courses. Pinocchio Park in Collodi is a fairytale experience in which the famous story of Pinocchio was written. And, of course, Italy is renowned for its ice cream, with a famous one being San Gimignano, which has won many awards.
- The Outdoors
The Maremma coastline has wild, sandy stretches perfect for campervan hire in Tuscany, and Elba Island is a short ferry ride away if you want to explore a bit further. Saturnia is where you’ll find natural hot springs with steaming blue pools that are free to enjoy.
Campervan offers for couples in Tuscany
For a romantic trip for two exploring Tuscany and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.
Campervan offers for families in Tuscany
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Tuscany, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Campervan offers for dog owners in Tuscany
Whether it's a campervan or a classic motorhome, there are now several rental companies in Tuscany that allow pets in their vehicles. In the CamperDays search, you can easily search for suitable offers using the "Pets allowed" filter.
Best Campervan routes from Tuscany
Florence to Val d’Orcia
The chances are when you rent a campervan in Tuscany, you will be picking up from near Florence, so this route starts there. Stock up on supplies and head south towards Chianti (where the wines are from). Stop at a local vineyard and pick up a bottle or two. Take a slight detour to Siena and visit the Piazza del Campo (the famous cathedral). After that, it's time to head to Val d’Orcia and check out the picture-perfect views around you.
Lucca to Cinque Terre
Start in Lucca, which we think is one of Tuscany’s best (and underrated) cities. Rent a bike, cycle along the city walls and grab some local food before hitting the coast. Take the scenic route west through Pisa (stop for the leaning tower photo) before heading towards the cliffs of Cinque Terre. Spend the day wandering through Vernazza, Riomaggiore and Manarola, where colourful houses cling to the cliffs.
Siena to Maremma
For a campervan trip off the beaten track, rent a motorhome in Tuscany and head from Siena down into the Maremma region, which is Tuscany’s wilder, more rugged side. Stop at San Gimignano, which we have mentioned before, with its famous towers and some of the best gelato in Italy. Then carry on into Maremma. Some towns to check out in the area in your campervan are Pitigliano and Castiglione della Pescaia, where you can park up your campervan by the sea.
Sites of interest and excursions in Tuscany
San Gimignano
Its famous towers once belonged to feuding families trying to outdo each other (because, apparently, building the tallest tower was the medieval version of showing off). Today, 14 still stand, giving the town a unique skyline. Have a walk through the historic streets and courtyards. Before you leave, climb Torre Grossa, the tallest of the towers, for fantastic views of the Tuscan countryside.
Pisa & The Leaning Tower
When you pick up your camper van for hire in Tuscany, you will likely want to grab your picture pretending you are holding up the leaning tower, but theres so much more to Pisa than that. Take a walk along the Arno River - this is where Pisa’s quieter, more local side comes to life with its colourful buildings, charming cafes, and it shows you a part of Pisa that most tourists miss.
Val d’Orcia
Have you ever seen those postcards of Italy with the classic rolling hills, winding roads and golden fields? The chances are it was taken in Val d'Orcia. It's an area between Siena and Montepulciano often referred to as peak Tuscany. It's a great place to drive around in your campervan. Stop at Pienza, a tiny town known for pecorino chees,e or Montepulciano, which has some of the best wine in the region.

Tuscany has designed campervan spots called aree di sosta, and some towns have strict rules on parking overnight. We recommend using official campsites where you can.
Many medieval towns were not designed for cars, never mind driving a motorhome for hire in Tuscany. The streets can be narrow, and some don’t allow campervans. Park on the outskirts and walk into the town where you can.
In the summer, you need to book in advance. Tuscany is very popular, and the best campsites fill up fast. In Spring and Autumn, it's a bit easier, but it will still be busy.
Most major highways in Italy are toll roads, and you’ll need to pay based on how far you travel. Your booking provider can assist you with this, but we always recommend taking the scenic route - no tolls and who knows what you might come across.
