Best campervan routes around Austria

One of the best ways to make the most of your time when you book a motorhome for hire in Austria is to take a trip along one of the many great driving routes around the country.

Austrian Romantic Road
The Austrian Romantic Road crosses through the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and Salzburg while taking in fantastic holiday areas like Salzkammergut, Limestone Alps National Park, and Vienna. Most of the route involves driving along the scenic A1, and while it may only take three and a half hours to complete, you can spend a lot of time stopping at different destinations along the way.

Gerlos Alpine Road
A shorter route but still worth taking is the Gerlos Alpine Road, which extends for 69km and is a mountain pass road. It links the Salzburg town of Mittersill with the Tyrolean town of Zell am Ziller.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road
One of Austria's most dramatic and scenic driving routes is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. It's incredibly picturesque and attracts around 900,000 visitors worldwide every year. Given the high elevation points and all the beautiful vistas along the way, it is best to consider it a relaxing experience rather than a race.

Traffic rules in Austria

Traffic rules
  • You need to remember that when you rent a motorhome in Austria, you drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left-hand side. You can’t overtake on and when approaching official pedestrian crossings, and if it means you will be crossing an uninterrupted white line.

  • According to local signage, the speed limits in Austria are between 30 and 50km/h in built-up areas, 100km/h outside built-up areas, and 130km/h on motorways.

  • You can only sound horns when there is any danger on the road, but you should avoid using them when you are near or in Vienna and close to hospitals.

  • Both drivers should stop when driving on many mountain roads, as there is not enough space for two vehicles to pass one another. You need to use discernment, as there are flexible rules about who has priority in these situations.

Places of interest and excursions in Austria

Hohe Tauern National Park
The largest national park in Austria, Hohe Tauern National Park, covers 1,856 square kilometres of land, split into a 643 square kilometre outer zone and a 1,213 square kilometre core zone. Within the national park's boundaries, around 15,000 to 20,000 animal species are found, 4,000 types of fungi, and 3,500 species of plants, including algae and lichens. When visiting, some animals to look out for include chamois, marmot, golden eagle, ibex and bearded vulture.

Grüner See – Green Lake
The name of the lake comes from its incredible emerald-green water. Interestingly, the lake is 1 to 2 metres deep, and its surrounding areas are a country park. During spring, with the increase in temperature and melting of the snow, the land basin fills with water and reaches a maximum depth of approximately 12 metres. There are various fauna to look out for in the lake, including multiple species of trout, fly larvae, small crabs, water fleas, and snails.
